This great hymn was written in 1868 by Elizabeth C. Clephane, a woman who was sickly and frail. She, like most of the Scottish Presbyterians of her day were devout Christians and took their faith in God seriously. This included daily Bible study, helping the needy in the community, feeding the hungry, etc.
Elizabeth was gifted with a talent of writing poetry and had several poems published in the Scottish Presbyterian Magazine entitled “The Family Treasure.” The majority of her poems were published in the same magazine in 1872, three years after her death. She wrote “Beneath The Cross Of Jesus” one year before her death.
