CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN MUSIC—IS IT BIBLICAL OR WORLDLY WORSHIP?

Biblical worship puts the emphasis on the understanding and knowing God through the truth of His Word. The old traditional hymns demonstrated this with the words edifying the understanding rather than the feelings. Worldly music emphasizes the feelings and emotions—the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.

1 Corinthians 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

Psalms 47:7 For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.

1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

“The sound and style of secular contemporary music has been designed for the world, by the world, to appeal to the carnal mind. An attempt to make it spiritual doesn’t change the affect it has on people.”

— Gordon Sears

“The truth of the whole matter is that the mind of today’s Christian has become so amalgamated into thinking just like the world, he can no longer differentiate between music that is holy and set apart unto God, from music that is profane and of the flesh.”

— Gordon Sears

“When the standard of music is lowered, then the standard of dress is also lowered. When the standard of dress is lowered, then the standard of conduct is also lowered. When the standard of conduct is lowered, then the sense of value in God’s truth is lowered.”
